Pharmacy Compounding is...
...the long-established tradition in pharmacy
practice that enables physicians to prescribe and patients to use
medicines (chemicals mixed with other chemicals), that are specially
prepared by the pharmacist to meet the patients’ individual needs.
More than Pills and Capsules
Compounding pharmacies are different from traditional
pharmacies in that we tailor our medications to meet the specific
needs of the patient. For example, where a commercial medication
may be avaiable only as a tablet, we can often offer the same medication
in a wider variety forms:

Precise Dosage
Sometimes a patient needs a medication in a strength that isn't available commercially. This requires the patient to divide pills or take the medication more often. As a compounding pharmacy, we can adjust the medication's strength to better fit the patient. For example, if a pill is available only in a 5mg strength, and the physician prescribes a 2.5mg dose, the patient is left to cutting the pill. As a compounding pharmacy, we can create capsules with the 2.5mg dosage. No more dividing pills.
Medicine for Children
Pediatric medicine is one of our specialties. We all know how difficult it can be to administer medications to children. Many antibiotics, taken orally, have a horribly bitter taste. As a compounding pharmacy, we are able to add flavorings to these medications to make them more palatable, and thus easier for the child to take. Some medications can also be compounded as lollipops, providing another way of getting the child the medicine he/she needs.
Easier Patient Dosing
Sometimes patients who take many medications have difficulty remembering if they are current in their dosing. Counting pills and doing the math can be tedious. For this, we offer blister packs which make following the daily doses of pills easy. For solutions, we offer dosing syringes, which make dispensing the solution in an appropriate amount easy.
Sterile Solutions
Our pharmacy features a "sterile room," which enables us to compound injections, pellets, intravenous solutions, and ophthalmics.
Other Reasons to Compound
- When a medicine is needed in a form not commercially available, whether tablet, capsule, suppository, or liquid.
- When a pharmaceutical company no longer manufactures a particular medicine.
- When there is little demand for a drug and the manufacturers won't make it.
- When a patient wants or needs preservative-free, dye-free, lactose-free, etc. medication.
- When a patient is allergic to a commercially available form of medicine.
